Riddick by CatCouch Riddick by CatCouch
Here's my entry for the Riddick contest. I had a decent amount of fun with this one since I tried working in grey scale and overlaying the colors and tried some new texture techniques. This is pretty different from my usual work too.

Edit: I made some adjustments from some of the feedback I received. Critiques and comments still welcome~

Be sure to check out how I made this piece:

It's always like that, huh? Have a dog in a movie? Do you like him? You can bet that thing will die.

This looks great! I think there should be a bit more contrast between the warms and cools (it'd make it pop more) but overall it's really nice! :D

Thanks for the feedback. I talked with some others about the contrast, making Riddick darker so his silhouette pops more would probably help with the contrast. I'll keep it in mind for my next work. Thank you~

I love the lightning and how you have added a bit abstractness with your style :)

Thanks! I'm surprised you picked up on the abstractness. When I was blocking in elements like the dog I thought to myself it looked a bit like abstract art and I did try to keep a bit of that blockiness in when rendering it all out. I need to try some more abstract stuff in the future~

Yes, I think trough blocking the Colors you have achieved: form rules over the outlines. It's really interesting to look at :)

Thank you! I tend to get mixed responses to whether the "blocky" feel of my art is a good or bad thing.

I would say that you have a good grasp of color theory - at least with choosing color schemes.

I feel fairly comfortable with some complementary colors like orange and blue but I still struggle with values. I made this piece with that in mind but trying to have the background brighter so Riddick's silhouette would draw your attention. Being in shadow separates him from the background. I wanted the contrast to make him the focal point.

Try doing a full range of gray-scale first then overlay or lay a color layer on top of the gray-scale. That might be better for you until you get comfortable with a value scale with just hues.

That's what I did with this one, grayscale and then used the overlay layer to place the colors before painting in some more for the finishing details. It worked alright for Riddick so I'll do some more like this to get better at balancing the right values to draw the eye to the focal point. I'll do some Black and White pieces too to simplify things and understand the fundamentals.

Try to push your darker values more but make sure you don't take away detail from your focal points. Composition is a tricky thing.

Thanks! Darker values is a critique I've received before. I get kinda washed out looking work because of it now that I look back. I'm studying all the ways you can use light and color for composition now. That should help a bit.

Thanks!

I decided to have the environment be lighter while keeping Riddick darker to push his silhouette and accentuate his light eyes. I would have gone darker if the movie seemed darker but most of the trailer has him in brighter dessert-like locations. It looks like a brighter environment than say "Pitch Black" so I wanted to reflect that.

Thanks! I spend most of my time looking at other peoples amazing art for inspiration and trying to not feel bad about my own art. Inspiration is just the best thing in the world! I still feel like I'm not putting enough time into it though, but I guess all artists feel that way though. :)
